Jane
Rule was born in New Jersey in 1931 and graduated from Mills
College in 1952. Rule was a writer of lesbian-themed novels and
non-fiction and outspoken proponent of free speech and gay rights. She moved to Canada in 1956, where she taught at the
University of British Columbia. In 1976, Ms. Rule moved to Galiano
Island, BC, Canada. Rule died at the age of 76 on November 27,
2007 at her home on Galiano Island due to complications from
liver cancer, refusing any treatment that would take her from the
island.
