They
call themselves merely "do-ers", but we say they are
real sheroes! Brenda and Wanda Hensen are founders of
Camp Sister Spirit (CSS), a feminist educational
and cultural retreat center in Ovett, Mississippi. Their
story over the last several decades at CSS is an
incredible inspiration.
The Hensen Mission-
The goal for Camp Sister Spirit was to create a
place from which to care and share food and clothing
with neighbors and to work with whomever walked through
the door, while creating an indigenous lesbian culture
autonomous from the patriarchy. Whew! That was one tall
order, but the Hensens are achieving it, despite
numerous set backs over the last several decades
including hate crimes and misdemeanors against their
property and animals.
Hurricane Katrina - In 2005 Camp Sister Spirit
reached out her arms to the local community, devastated
after Hurricane Katrina. The Camp had sustained a lot of
damage too but the Hensens, with extensive help from
their supporters, were able to cook, feed and house many
neighbors in need. No one was turned away --
irregardless of their race, sexual orientation, gender,
religion or ability to pay.
POSTSCRIPT: Sadly, Brenda Hensen passed away
after a long battle with cancer on February 1, 2008.
